In questi ultimi anni è molto dibattuta la questione se la Marijuana o l'Haschish siano "droghe di accesso" verso l'utilizzo di altre sostanze illecite ritenute più pericolose, come ad esempio l'Eroina e la Cocaina. Non solo, la questione si complica ulteriormente se si tiene conto anche delle sostanze legali, come ad esempio Alcol e tabacco, il cui uso solitamente le precede. Su questo tema sono stati pubblicati numerosi studi, ma la "questione" non è ancora chiarita in modo definitivo ed emergono posizioni tra loro distinte. Per alcuni autori l'ipotesi appare plausibile soprattutto in relazione ad età di inizio e frequenza d'uso. Per altri in questo percorso vanno anche considerati fattori di rischio collegati ad ambiente, predisposizione personale e genetica, comportamenti devianti e socialità.
Il tema è stato da me affrontato in modo più approfondito nel libro "Sostanze legali e illegali: motivi e significati del consumo" FrancoAngeli Editore Milano 2008 pagine 54/72, dove sono anche riportati i risultati di uno studio condotto nell'area metropolitana di Bologna.
